ruuger: (XF - old school)

And so we begin, with an episode that to me will always be THE episode. This was my absolute favourite episode back in the day, and I loved it in a way that only a 15-year-old fangirl can love.

Writer: Glen Morgan and James Wong
Director: David Nutter
Originally aired: September 16, 1994

Synopsis: With the X-Files closed down, Mulder and Scully have been separated for the first (but definitely not the last) time, with Scully teaching in Quantico and Mulder stuck listening to wiretap tapes. When Mulder gets a tip about possible proof about extraterrestrial life, he heads out to the jungles of Puerto Rico without a second thought, leaving Scully to cover for - and ultimately also rescue - him. Did Mulder really have a close encounter of the third kind with the aliens, or was it all just a fever dream?

Favourite Quote:
"Before, I could only trust myself. Now, I can only trust you. And they've taken you away from me."

Transcript

(I was planning to end this summary with a scan of the fantabulous transcript I made back in 1995 of all the dialogue in this episode (so that I could read that instead of having to wear down the VHS tape), but all my XF stuff has been lost somewhere in the depths of my parents' basement. Woe.)

Those of you who know me are aware that I'm not too eloquent when trying to tell people about myself but here goes.

The X Files first aired in the UK on 19th September 1994.  I was almost 13 and after moving schools two years prior was still trying to find my place.  I was not a popular kid.  I had a different accent, hadn't made the journey to high school with a group of friends and then made the “mistake” in my first year of standing up to some bullies in the popular crowd picking on a smaller kid in my class.   I was an outsider, with no route in.

My dad at the time still vetted my TV viewing and had recorded the show to make sure it was acceptable viewing, thankfully he agreed I could watch it and I started a 20 year love affair with a show and characters that I would lean on during the best and worst moments of my life. Mulder taught me that it was OK not to be the popular kid, that standing up for what's right is sometimes more important and the friends that count will accept you for who you are.   Scully taught me that it was OK to be a girl who was into science, something that was the boy’s domain in my high school. She gave me the strength to go into interviews, meetings, public speaking and to claw my way back from depression after a harsh break up.  The characters taught me that love was complicated and involved a meeting of minds.

I'm also immensely grateful that the fandom has granted me friendship and allowed me to connect with others of a similar mind-set.  You guys are great!
Anyway, on with Part 1 of today’s offering.

I’ve been reading TV Mouse’s reviews of the M&S relationship.  And although I’m not a day 1 shipper, although there was chemistry there I’m more of movie/season 6 shipper (aside from fanfic)
This Vid includes all the Season 1 moments.
