And so we begin, with an episode that to me will always be THE episode. This was my absolute favourite episode back in the day, and I loved it in a way that only a 15-year-old fangirl can love.

Writer: Glen Morgan and James Wong
Director: David Nutter
Originally aired: September 16, 1994

Synopsis: With the X-Files closed down, Mulder and Scully have been separated for the first (but definitely not the last) time, with Scully teaching in Quantico and Mulder stuck listening to wiretap tapes. When Mulder gets a tip about possible proof about extraterrestrial life, he heads out to the jungles of Puerto Rico without a second thought, leaving Scully to cover for - and ultimately also rescue - him. Did Mulder really have a close encounter of the third kind with the aliens, or was it all just a fever dream?

Favourite Quote:
"Before, I could only trust myself. Now, I can only trust you. And they've taken you away from me."

(I was planning to end this summary with a scan of the fantabulous transcript I made back in 1995 of all the dialogue in this episode (so that I could read that instead of having to wear down the VHS tape), but all my XF stuff has been lost somewhere in the depths of my parents' basement. Woe.)

I did this too! As I didn't have a a VCR in my room I taped the audio to casset so I could listen to it on my walkman. I also wrote out Mulder's "We wanted... to believe. We wanted to call out, voiceover, trying out my best handwriting and my new fountain pen. Will have to scan it when I get home.

Will have to scan it when I get home.

That would be fun to see.

We had a VCR so we had dozens of episodes taped. I was a latecomer to the fandom. Beginning in 2005, I began taping TNT at night and watching the Scifi channel's reruns in the daytime.

Such a wonderful episode! What a great way to start a new season. They were so young, so pretty, and so unaware of just how fucked up their lives were going to become. Good times!

These are just a few pages of the folder where I obsessively purchased any magazine with a tiny picture of them in it. Also some typing practice that I had forgotten about (on an electric typewriter - hence the crossing out). Image

Ah, cutting things out of TV guides and such, good times. I still have my collection too. :oD

This is really cute. Coming into the fandom so late, I had to make due with hand-me-down clippings which [livejournal.com profile] estella_c gave me.

Gillian's hair in that last photo is hysterical.

Yes. Oddly though, she herself seems quite serene.

Aw, very cute. I have a folder of cuttings like that somewhere deep in a box. I still have my VHS boxsets though. They're massive and take way too much space but I'll be damn if I'm going to throw them away. I even have S1 twice. One in English and one in French. I wonder if they still work.

I seem to have misplaced all my aged memorabilia somewhere. But this yellowing scrapbook collation is just so heart-tickling. (There's no trademark on that adjective, so you can use it at will.)

"I attended his funeral at Arlington through a pair of binoculars from a thousand yards away."

Scully's hand on Mulder's head is the most adorable thing!

I'm not sure why, but I find Mulder with his shirt open really hilarious.

Poor guy hiding in the toilet all this time.
I like it when people remember that they can use drawing to communicate.

Scully fooling her tail is the best.

Not enough of Mulder and Scully together in this episode, though.

Scully fooling her tail is the best.

I know. The Cancer Man's arrogance was epic and then his people couldn't do their jobs. She slipped right through their fingers.

I also get the distinct impression that the CSM's arrogance is making an enemy of Skinner—I go back and forth on how to read the penultimate scene, but it sure seems as though Mulder keeps his job because as angry as Skinner is at him, he’s more angry at Cancer Man. Like, at this point Skinner isn’t really invested in supporting Mulder, but he’ll keep him on just to deny that smug smoking bastard his victory.

I love the introduction to Scully's ability to perform slight of hand and that their conversation in the parking lot obviously meant a lot to Mulder. I don't think he purposefully left her the clue in the passenger manifest, he wanted to keep her out of it.

I think you're right. I think he's not that good at covering his tracks. His enthusiasm gets the best of him and he gets careless.

I loved how Scully guessed his password in three tries.

Of course, she knows him better than the opposition. And she follows him, taking a lot of traveling trouble and problem getting her hair all frizzy. How can people believe they might have separated after the first season??

"Little Green Men" is an early season gem. To see him, Scully must arrange for a covert meeting with Mulder in a parking garage. She's doing fine in her old position at Quantico but Mulder seems lost without the X-Files.

We finally get our first glimpse of an extraterrestrial biological entity.

We're introduced to Mulder's longtime ally in Congress, Senator Richard Matheson.

When Senator Matheson tips him off that something important is going down in at an abandoned NASA observatory in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, Mulder goes AWOL. (How is it that he's still employed?

To no one's surprise, Scully figures out where he's headed and goes after him. Cancer Man is so certain she'll find him that he doesn't bother conducting a search. He just directs his minions to follow her.

My most memorable quote:
Scully: And you're worried that all your life, you've been seeing elves?
Mulder: In my case... little green men.
Scully: But, Mulder... during your time with the X-Files, you've seen so much.
Mulder: That's just the point. Seeing is not enough, I should have something to hold onto. Some solid evidence. I learned that from you. Emphasis mine.

And I have fanfic recs:
In the Fields of Boaz by Crinolynne
Summary: He's still not sure what she's doing here, her presence a Fortean event.

The View from the Outer Office: Little Green Men by Lara Means
Summary: SUMMARY: The gossip train chugs along.
AUTHOR'S NOTE: This story is the second in a series of post-ep/missing scene fics centering on Kim, Skinner's assistant. Each is self-contained.

Whiteout Book Three by Paige Caldwell
Summary: "It's amazing how things change, isn't it? The rest of the series is at Gossamer.

Drive by posting because long day at work ergo knackered.

I never cared much for Little Green Men, even if my LJ name stems from this episode IIRC. Mulder messing about in the base held little interest for me. I guess the lack of M&S interaction is what makes this ep quite boring for me, even if there are some nice moments.

But Fish, she lies and cheats and--doesn't steal, but refuses to use a credit card--just to find him in case he's in trouble. That's so romantic. And then, before the flight back, she jumps his bones! Oh--sorry--I think Syntax6 put that in there. But it fits perfectly!

I find this an erotic episode, despite their lack of shared screen time. Their first meeting is darkly charged, and in my opinion Scully's persistence just to find out if Mulder is "all right" is important to him. He wants to withdraw, and she reminds him of her loyalty. Then the ominous shadows and flashing lights and rain and sweat in that claustrophobic little jungle shack when she finds him...dead? It's all so intense. And, for the record, I don't think a shirtless Mulder is hilarious. A bit obvious, perhaps, but I'll take it. (As the kitten says. Everybody know the kitten?)

I know that the viewership for The X-Files picked up considerably during that pre-season summer, and I like to think that this opening show demonstrates a kind of confidence and triumph. The opening monologue is poignant and theatrically filmed, and the closing monologue is poignant with an echo.

Fish, those headaches! You have all my sympathy. Seek medical attention. Demand drugs.

Okay you have a point. She protects him and it is sweet. I have to read this Syntax6 story.

I seem to have forgotten this ep had shirtless Mulder in it. The shame, THE SHAME!

What kitten?

I do LOVE the ending though. My heart does little pitter patter everytime. And I was a Noromo back then.

Thanks. I shall demand drugs next week. In the meantime I'm hoping that the great outdoor will do the trick over the weekend.

Bit late but, KITTEN: Go to YouTube and punch in ultimate dog tease. Watch the whole thing. Then hunt up the sequel.

There are many brilliant animal bits out there.
