wendelah1: (Agent Mulder I've been you)
[personal profile] wendelah1 posting in [community profile] xf_is_love
Continuing in Hollywood's long-standing tradition of misrepresenting Vodou as evil and having ties to Satanism, "Fresh Bones" manages to hit every cultural cliché in the books, from the walking dead to black cats are evil spirits.

Apart from that, it was grisly, slow-moving, and implied that the US government would participate in a cover-up of the systematic maltreatment of a refugee population. Of course they would, but what does that have to do with the X-Files? The puzzle pieces sure didn't fit together by the end in this episode.

Writer: Howard Gordon
Director: Rob Bowman
Originally aired: February 3, 1995

Synopsis: At the request of a Marine widow, Mulder and Scully investigate the suicides of two Marines whose company had been tasked with policing a Haitian refugee center in North Carolina.

Most Memorable Quote:
Scully: Mulder, voodoo only works by instilling fear among its believers. You saw the way Bauvais tried to intimidate me. The power of suggestion is considerable, I'll admit... But this is no more magic than a pair of fuzzy dice.

This episode definitely has atmosphere. I actually had fun rewatching it. And the scene with Scully in the car is still one of the creepiest things I've ever seen.

Man alive, I can't stand those clingy, whiny women who nag at their husbands. Yeah, he was being a jerk in the beginning. But if he doesn't want to go to the doctor (like most guys don't) then leave him alone!

Am I the only one who's squicked out with scenes of young children crying? Infants cry whenever, so I suppose they just film scenes around their mood. And older kids learn to cry on cue. (Which bothers me as well.) But this child looks way too young to know how to act like that. I'm hoping they caught the child crying for real for whatever reason, THEN the actress pretended to also cry and holds him. I can't imagine they deliberately frightened the child (by the actor yelling) into crying for real. I don't want to know!

I love that so often people call M&S when they "just don't know what to do anymore." There are few things as frightening and frustrating as being in that position. When someone believes you, listens to you, and offers some answers, it's like a lifeline.

Oh, look. It's that bald-headed actor that I always enjoy watching here and there, but can never remember his name. (Daniel Benzali.)

Wow, is that Callum Keith Rennie as the groundskeeper? Yes! He's been on a zillion shows. And he needs to be on more. I wouldn't mind him on my TV, 24/7.

How did Mulder know that a 10 card means to meet X on some road? (I know, I know. Just smile and nod.)

You'd think that Scully would get that hand looked at when she sees it all nasty looking after being punctured by a who-knows-what type of thorn. You know, being a doctor and all.

All in all, another one where it seems a bunch of things tossed together that don't necessarily come together in the end. But it's still creepy to watch. I guess that's enough.

But man, the ending is terrifying!

I don't even remember hearing the title until I was looking him up on IMDB. Thanks.

It was cancelled after a much-promoted first season. And, to be honest, Benzali has a fabulous presence but it's hard to catch him actually acting.

But the guy should definitely go to a doctor - not just he himself his suffering, but his wife and child too.
Yeah, the kid crying made me uncomfortable.

Hee, your icon is made by the girl who ran the German 24 board of which I used to be a member!

All the familiar faces in this episode! :oD

How can Mulder encounter a cat and not pet it?! I'm very disappointed.

And this episode is especially amusing!

Bruce A. Young from The Sentinel! God, at the beginning I was grumpy at the show for the most ridiculous reason: It was in The X-Files's slot. But that was because due to summer hiatus there were no new X-Files episodes, so the channel had to fill that slot with something new.

And Jamil Walker Smith from Stargate: Universe! Little Greer, how cute!

Callum Keith Rennie from everywhere!

Roger R. Cross from 24!

Peter Kelamis also from SGU!

Oh, man, I am so behind on television. So you can guess how behind I am on everything else.
