X-Files Favourites...
Favourite Season: Season One. This season seems pretty unpolished, but that's actually what I like about it. Mulder is still wide-eyed with wonder, not the cynical person he'd later become, and Scully seems a lot happier, too -- in no small part because she hasn't yet been abducted. Because the conspiracy narrative hasn't yet spiraled out into complex and confusing ways, the mytharc episodes are a lot more simplistic -- though still pretty complicated (I think I've seen "E.B.E." over a hundred times, and I still haven't come up with a definitive idea about what's really going on). A lot of people aren't really fans of how Mulder and Scully are dressed in Season One, but I feel differently. Mulder's loud ties, mismatched jackets and pants, strands of hair that just won't stay put, and Scully's shoulder pads, oversized purple jackets, and puffy hair make them seem more down-to-earth, more relateable. (And Mulder's ties are awesome; I don't care what anyone says. I mean, yeah, they're ugly, but I think they reveal so much about his personality.) I love that Season One Mulder (especially Pilot!Mulder) is an unabashedly dorky goofball -- who is nonetheless (and perhaps somewhat inexplicably) a law enforcement officer. I love that Season One Scully simultaneously seems "green" but also like someone who clearly knows how to take charge. I love that the CSM is still super mysterious.
Favourite Character: Mulder. I love Scully, too, but I find Mulder much easier to relate to. I'm a skeptic, and I get told that I seem very "logical," so you'd think I'd relate better to Scully -- but Mulder's scatterbrained, outside-of-the-box way of thinking is more like how I think (Scully strikes me as more methodical and precise in her thought process), and I also tend to be obsessive, get stupidly excited about weird, random stuff, and I have a sarcastic sense of humour. So I guess I just feel more drawn to Mulder.
Favourite Episode: "E.B.E." As I mentioned above, I've watched this over a hundred times (well, probably). I'm not really sure why it's my favourite. Maybe it's the fact that it has so many twists and turns and you can never really figure out what's really going on. I love that scene in the beginning when they talk about swamp gas ("Swamp gas?"), and our first meeting with the Lone Gunmen is pretty awesome, and who doesn't love a UFO party?
Favourite Movie: Fight The Future. I admit that the plot doesn't make a lot of sense, and there's a lot of really ridiculous stuff (like how there's no explanation of how Mulder and Scully got back from Antarctica, or the fact that the Conspiracy is apparently breeding Noromo bees who hang around in Scully's collar doing nothing until Mulder tries to kiss her -- I'm not even a shipper, but come on, what are the chances of the bee not doing anything until that exact moment, I mean really) -- but it's a pretty exciting movie.
Favourite Quote:
SCULLY: Have you ever entertained the idea of trying to find life on this planet?
MULDER: I have seen the life on this planet, Scully, and that is exactly why I am looking elsewhere.
