Perfect Day for a Ballgame

I've been an X Files fan since age 10. I was a bit of a horror nut growing up (still am, really), and I blundered into an X Files episode one night thinking I was getting away with watching the R-rated totally-not-allowed-to-watch movie that had just come out called "Ghost in the Machine" on prime time television. Alas, I did not get the gory virtual reality mayhem I was expecting, but I found something even better-- a quirky little show that was like a condensed one-hour horror movie every week. Looking back, "Ghost in the Machine" is an odd choice for a gateway episode. It's by no stretch of the imagination the best the show has to offer, and many count it among the worst. Nonetheless, it was mine, and I never looked back.
I grew up on Mulder and Scully, spent my summers lurking on AOL message boards and feeding off of wild speculation that followed each season finale and the desperate anticipation leading up to each premiere. The show left such a deep impression on me that even now, 20 years later, I can spot an actor in a movie, TV show, or commercial, snap my fingers and name the X Files episode he or she appeared in.
My entry is a short post-col piece inspired by the following request from
omg_wtf_yeah in the fanworks wishlist thread:
Anything AU. Like Mulder and Scully find each other after the zombie apocalypse and road trip, looking for Mulder's remaining family (maybe Samantha could be that industrious apocalypse survivor who sends out transmissions for other survivors).
It doesn't quite match up with the prompt. There are no zombies, and Mulder finding Scully is a bit loosely defined in my story. But what grabbed me was the idea of Samantha as the voice on the radio, sending out transmissions for other survivors.
You can find Perfect Day for a Ballgame at my website, or read here below the cut.
