The X-Files has been a part of my life for the twenty years since I holed up at my best friend's house one Friday night in 1993 to watch the pilot. It's brought me numerous relationships (good and bad, fleeting or everlasting) and an avalanche of memories that I'll never forget. To think that this show, and my love for Mulder and Scully, so dramatically shaped my life... well, the enormity of that is something my mind can't quite envelop. It's really best summarized in my favorite quote from the series:

"Time passes in moments... moments which, rushing past, define the path of a life, just as surely as they lead towards its end. How rarely do we stop to examine that path, to see the reasons why all things happen, to consider whether the path we take in life is our own making, or simply one into which we drift with eyes closed?"

The X-Files dropped in my lap when I was fourteen and that moment changed everything. Without it, my life surely would have been different. But I like where it led me and I wouldn't change a thing.

I wish I'd had more time to come up with something bigger for my day, but I offer you this humble fanmix which illustrates one of my favorite aspects of the relationship between Scully and Mulder--the darkness within, the fight to continue on, triumphs and failures, and the holding of each other's secrets and eventually, each other's hearts.

florence + the machine - what the water gave me
and oh, poor Atlas / the world’s a beast of a burden / you’ve been holding up a long time

nicole atkins - vultures
vultures circle in / heavy like a stone / they take all they can get / until you're dirt and bones

boy & bear - big man
but you came in the middle and you fell in my hands / oh, a wonderful woman and an average man

the killers - shot at the night
give me a shot at the night / i feel like i'm losing the fight

coldplay - atlas
some far away / some search for gold / some dragon to slay / heaven we hope is just up the road

bon iver - towers
well, youʼre standing on my sternum don’t you climb down darling

boyce avenue - find me
find me, here in your arms / now I’m wondering where you’ve always been / blindly, I came to you / knowing you’d breathe new life from within

(sorry for the delay on this episode post going up - I had some problems with the queue)

We move on to season 8 and the 'the next generation' episodes, staring with "Invocation". This is not Doggett's first episode, but it's one that gives him more depth, foreshadowing the later reveal about his lost son. And, of course, it's also a great example of the Creepy Child episodes that X-Files so loved :D

A good, creepy stand-alone, or sadly missing Mulder? You decide! ;)

Director: Richard Compton
Written: David Amann
Originally aired: December 3, 2000 (in the US)

Synopsis:
Scully and Doggett investigate a case where a little boy who disappeared years earlier suddenly reappears without having aged a day.

Most Memorable Quote:
DOGGETT: Agent Scully, don't ask me to believe that this is some kind of justice from beyond the grave.
SCULLY: All I'm saying is that maybe you succeeded... whether you're willing to see that or not.
