Ever since I first began watching the series, I've been obsessed with the abduction arc. I've watched this episode countless times. Despite that familiarity, I always manage to forget that the teaser of "Duane Barry" clearly establishes that the title character is in fact an alien abductee. During the flashback scene, we see the bright light and the aliens; heck, we even get to see the spaceship. Having that fact established is what creates the dramatic tension in the rest of the episode. But this is The X-Files, so not everything is as it first appears to be.

Writer: Chris Carter
Director: Chris Carter
Originally aired: October 14, 1994
Synopsis:
When an escaped mental patient takes his therapist and several others hostage, Mulder is sent to assist the hostage negotiation team. Why? Because the mental patient, Duane Barry, insists he's been abducted by aliens. "I'm telling 'em I don't want to go...but they never listen."
Most Memorable Quote:
Scully: Mulder, it's me. I just had something incredibly strange happen. This piece of metal that they took out of Duane Barry, it has some kind of code on it. I ran it through a scanner, and some kind of serial number came up. What the hell is this thing, Mulder? It's almost as if... it's almost as if somebody was using it to catalog him... Mulder! I need your help! Mulder! [shouts] Mulder!

Fanfiction:
In a Dark Time by Anna S (eliade) is one of the first Mulder/Krycek stories I read, and it's still one of my all-time favorite XF fics, in any genre. It fulfills every requirement of mine for good M/K: it's set during season two prior to Scully's abduction, and it's by turns violent, twisted and passionate—and so is the sex.
